People tend to die the way they have lived

Quote from a hospice nurse in “To Accept What Cannot Be Helped,” an article by Ann Hulbert about the death of her mother. She offers a change in the traditional serenity prayer:

Father, give us courage to change what must be altered,
serenity to accept what cannot be helped,
and the insight to know the one from the other.

Normal serenity prayer:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
