Trying to conform or being tranformed?

When I heard this morning, “He died that we might conform to his image,”  something didn’t quite feel right about that statement.  Indeed we are to be and will be conformed to his image but is it not something that God does? He is the one who transforms us into the image of Christ as Romans 12:2 says, a process that happens as we continue to behold the Lord Jesus (2 Cor 3:18) but a process that will not be complete until we see him face to face (1 John 3:2).  Is Paul not saying in 2 Cor 3:18 that as we gaze upon Christ (so there is something we do), we begin to reflect his image.  But that process happens because it is the power of the Spirit doing the transforming work of making us look like Christ!  Maybe that is why Paul describes this process in terms of freedom in 2 Cor 3:17–we don’t have to make it happen and we don’t have to cover up or be ashamed when we are not reflecting him in all of his glory.  God is not yet finished with us (Phil 1:6) Yes, divine-human cooperation but his part is infinitely greater than ours! What a relief!!
